More than just the greatest hits

Jethro Tull works hard to keep fans happy

By John Black     John@bostoneventguide.com

Unlike a lot of classic rock tours passing through town this summer, Jethro Tull stands out as an event where fans know to expect the unexpected when singer Ian Anderson and his bandmates hit the stage. They’ll hear the hits that made them fans in the first place, but what the musicians will add to the set list is a mystery they will only unravel as the show progresses.

“A lot of people don’t like surprises when they come to an outdoor show in the summertime,” Anderson said in an interview with Boston Event Guide. “They want to hear the songs they know because that’s what they paid for. They want their musical tastes reaffirmed for one night and be shown that what they like, the reason they still listen to Jethro Tull, is still relevant. Making that happen is part of our job.

“But there has to be more for us on stage than playing the same songs the same way night after night,” Anderson added. “So we’ll mix it up by changing the classics around a bit or reaching back in our eclectic catalogue of songs and playing the unexpected. It just makes it more fun for us.”

Any fan who has seen Jethro Tull in concert will tell you that fun is what the show is all about. It may not be the laugh out loud kind of fun, Anderson explains, but he and the band work very hard to make sure the night is entertaining.

“We can’t be up there laughing and being silly all the time because a lot of the music we make just isn’t very happy. Some of it is angry, some of it’s quite emotional, and we need to honor the spirit of the original song,” he said. “It’s all part of the performance. I think that’s what people respond to when we play. They can tell how hard we are working to give then a show they will remember.”

With more than 60 million albums sold worldwide and more than 2,500 concerts performed in 40 countries, it will take a lot for fans to forget seeing Jethro Tull in concert.

Jethro Tull and special guests Procol Harum will be performing at the Bank of America Pavilion on Tuesday, June 15 at 7:30 PM. Tickets range between $30 and $60, and are available at http://www.ticketmaster.com.
