Sometimes, he admits, it
feels like a dream.
Although he’s been
playing guitar for more than half his life, Davy Knowles never imagined that
he’d one day be not only making a living as a musician but actually be out on
the road as the opening act for some of the guitar heroes he grew up listening
to: Bluesman Buddy Guy, Pete Townsend and The Who, Lynyrd Skynyrd and, as of
this week, Jeff Beck.
“I guess he saw a
video of me playing on YouTube and asked his manager to call my manager to see
if I wanted to go out on tour,” Knowles said. “My manager called and asked if I
liked Jeff Beck and before he could even finish the sentence I said yes. Yes,
anything.
“I just feel so
lucky,” Knowles added, referring to his new tour with Jeff Beck (which comes to
the House of Blues on Monday, April 13) and to his career in general. “I’ve
always felt that part of being a musician -- and a guitar player in particular
-- is knowing the history of the music you play, where it comes from and who
played it before you.”
Knowles passion for music started at a young age, hearing the music of Chuck
Berry, Bo Diddley and other classic rockers come through the wall of his
sister’s bedroom. It wasn’t until he heard Dire Straits’ ‘Sultans of Swing,’
while driving with his dad that he became obsessed with the idea of playing
guitar.
“I played before
school, on the bus to school and at recess,” he said. “When I got older I even
played during class. I couldn’t stop.” |

Luckily, Knowles had the talent to back up his
behavior and soon after his school career ended his
musical education began as he headed into the studio
with his band, the no-longer-together Back Door
Slam, to record his debut CD, Roll Away. Almost
before the CD was finished, he was on the road, and
he’s never looked back.
“I absolutely
love being on the road,” Knowles said. “I love it much more than being in
the studio. To me, making a recording is just something you do so you can
get back out there and play. That’s what it’s all about.”
Davy Knowles will be opening for Jeff Beck at the House of Blues on
Monday, April 13, at 7:30. Tickets are $45, $38. houseofblues.com
