Not just another free night of theater

You troupe ready to educate and entertain
By John Black      john@bostoneventguide.com

It’s not very often that Boston theater fans are offered a night of free theater, but that’s just what The Theater Offensive’s True Colors: Out Youth Theater troupe is doing next Tuesday night at the Central Square Theater.
The show, Not Just a Character, is an original theater piece created by troupe members that includes vignettes illustrating the struggles of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth and their straight allies (GLBTA), as well as deeply personal monologues by participants. The night will also include a question and answer session following the performance to give the audience a chance to interact with the performers, discuss the show and, perhaps more importantly, talk about what it means.
“The show takes on some serious issues, but it does it with humor and honesty,” explained Evelyn Francis, the troupe’s director of education. “It’s definitely a good night of theater and can be enjoyed as just that. The cast may be young – they range from ages 14 to 22 – but they are all professional actors who have worked hard to create a show that’s entertaining and informative.”

Francis said that the troupe has taken the show to schools around the state and received very positive feedback from audiences, as well as school officials. She hopes that the free performance next Tuesday will give others a chance to not only see what they’ve created, but get involved in an important part of their community.
“To be honest, a lot of people may be scared about a show like this and we really want to quell any fears they might have,” she said. “That’s why the Q&A after the show is so important. As well as being trained actors, the cast are trained in how to answer the kind of questions the work can bring out of an audience. At the end of the night, we really want people to walk out of the theater not thinking about these issues as problems, but to start thinking about being part of the solution.”
The Theater Offensive’s True Colors: Out Youth Theater troupe performs Not Just a Character on Tuesday, January 20 at 7 pm at the Central Square Theater. General admission is free.
