Martha Mitchell Calling
Location: Central Square Theater
In the midst of election season, The Nora Theatre Company presents the Boston area premiere of Jodi Rothe’s sharp and funny play, Martha Mitchell Calling, playing Thursday, October 16 through Sunday, November 9 at the Central Square Theater. Following successful runs at Shakespeare & Company, and in New York state and Florida, this multi-media production is directed by Daniela Varon and features Annette Miller (Diana Vreeland in The Nora’s Full Gallop and Elliot Norton Award winner, Best Solo Performance for Golda’s Balcony) as the feisty southern belle, Martha Mitchell, who clamors to be heard during the tumultuous times of the Watergate scandal.

Martha Mitchell Calling takes audiences back to a point in history when an administration was hindered with political corruption and the misuse of power, and one extraordinary woman didn’t want to keep it under wraps. With style and wit, the play tells the story of larger-than-life Southern socialite Martha Mitchell, wife of President Nixon’s Attorney General John Mitchell. Eclipsing her husband as a household name, she was dubbed “the Mouth of the South” and gained worldwide recognition for her outspokenness and famous phone calls to the press about matters the Nixon-era conspirators wanted kept quiet. Passionate and willing to take a stand, Martha Mitchell used her influence and intelligence to blow the whistle on the Nixon administration. Said President Nixon in a 1977 interview with David Frost, “If it hadn’t been for Martha, there’d have been no Watergate.” Mitchell, who didn’t live to see herself vindicated, receives a tribute of courage in this powerful and humorous play.

Martha Mitchell Calling plays at the Central Square Theater, 450 Mass. Ave. in Cambridge, Thursday October 16 through Sunday, November 9. Performances are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 PM, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM, with matinees on Sundays at 3 PM. Tickets for Martha Mitchell Calling, priced at $32; $22 for students with valid ID and seniors, can be purchased by calling (866) 811-4111, online at www.centralsquaretheater.org, or at the Central Square Theater box office. For box office hours, group discounts, and more info call (617) 576-9278 x213.
